Amy MacLennan

Teaching art is a challenging and gratifying profession that enriches my practice as a  painter, printmaker, and designer. Introducing new ideas and watching students develop their powers of looking and creating keeps me on my creative toes.

As gallery director at the McKendree University Gallery of Art, I enjoy exploring the opportunities the venue presents for students, our university, and local community. The Get Out! Paint Out! plein air event and exhibit, among others, enables me to help forge a bond between  artists and the public.

Personally, I enjoy painting en plein air, primarily  in oil and pastel. My intention is to communicate the  immediacy of experience of a particular place and time. I also maintain a studio in my home. Some of the works on display here were created during artist residencies at the Prairie Center for the Arts in Peoria, Illinois, Jentel in Wyoming, The Montana Artist Refuge in Basin, Montana, and while artist in residence at Eye-Land Institute in Butte, Montana. I am forever grateful for the solitude and friendships that helped form me as an artist and human being.

I am fortunate to be married to my best friend, Michael Neary, who also happens to be an extraordinary painter. Occasionally we collaborate on mural projects. His work may be viewed here. We are both members of the Midwest Paint Group.

I am  from West Terre Haute, Indiana, and earned my M.F.A. from Indiana State University. I have taught at McKendree University since 2012, where I am Associate Professor and Director of the Gallery of Art.
